A Tale of Two Towns

Date March 4, 2008

moody-and-bangor.jpgLast week we had a Read Around the Planet connection between students from Moody High School and Bangor High School. This was the first connection for both schools and was only our second high school collaboration project in four years! One of the teachers was sick and a substitute and the building coordinator went ahead with the connection. It was a great success.

Both towns are about the same size (about 2,000 people). Each group of students shared original poetry and a group of students from Moody shared an original song during the conference complete with guitar accompaniment.

The interactions during the Q and A are always my favorite part of the RAP connections. It is interesting to see how relationships begin to develop through distance.

What things do we have in common? “We’re just people! Don’t be shy!”

What things do we do at school? sports and service organizations

Do you have snow? “No” and “Yes, a lot. We have already had 8 snow days”

What is the largest city near you? “Waco, which is halfway between Dallas and Austin.”

Do you have a beach? “No” and “Yes…on Lake Michigan”

How tall is the tallest student in your school? (FYI–it was 6′8″ and 6′7″)

moody-rap6.jpgThe quality of presentations and interactions in this connection was excellent. The use of the boardroom style grouping worked well so that we could see all the students. The backdrop was nice so that we could focus on the person talking.

This was truly a worthwhile and enjoyable endeavor for my students. It was great for all the students to have an opportunity to share their original work and to dialogue directly with students from another area of the country. The interaction and participation was great!

The video conference was a great experience. It was really fun to get to talk to new people that live far away from us and do different things then we do!

I have never sang in front of anyone before. Especially people I don’t know. This was a great experience and I hope that they really liked it.
