The War: Central Texas Remembers
September 17, 2007
Tonight I went to the Veterans’ Celebration to see the new KWBU documentary, The War: Central Texas Remembers which is a collection of stories from our local WWII veterans which is going to be available on DVD. ![]()
It was an emotional event with some incredible stories. One that caught my attention was the story of Deanie Parrish who was a WASP in World War II. She was so engaging as she spoke of the call to duty and the contributions made by these amazing women. After their service during the war, their military records were sealed in 1944 and marked “Classified”. It was not until 1977 that their service was acknowledged and added to history textbooks.
After the front page article in our local paper yesterday entitled, “World War Whatever” about how high school students don’t understand WWII. Many students commented that reading the textbooks did not engage them with the content unless they knew or talked with someone who have been there. The story did not include any reference to how to engage students, so I am determined to take this DVD and to replicate the “Lest We Forget” program created by Janine at BCISD.
I believe that those of us who have access to the technology and the networks that connect us can us this technology to create memorable learning experiences and make our piece of the world a little bit better each day. Check out Janine’s Constitution Day event.
It was a powerful experience to be in a room with so many people who have sacrificed for our country and allowed us to enjoy the freedoms that we have today. It was an honor to be in the room with so many members of “The Greatest Generation”.
