The Numbers for 2006-07

Date July 16, 2007

I just submitted our required report to the state for utilization of our network for various videoconferencing activities.

These are the areas that we have to report:

  1. Dual-Credit high school classes (8 courses for 294 students)
  2. High School credit courses (4 courses for 82 students)
  3. Graduate courses (1 course for 7 students)
  4. Electronic Field Trips and Student Projects (495 sessions serving 15,300 students)
  5. Professional Development sessions (81 sessions serving 668 administrators and teachers)
  6.  Certification courses (none)

In our region, our numbers are flat in all categories except for one. Can you guess which one? Yes, our electronic field trips and student projects numbers have doubled in the past year. In 2005-06, we had 93 sessions serving 7,597 students. This year, 2006-07, we had 495 sessions serving 15,300 students.

Two things that strike me about this number.  First, at the state level, the category is called “Electronic Field Trips” with a comment that says to count student projects also. The reality for our center is that student projects and collaborations far out number “electronic field trips”. Second, there is no data captured for who is actually running/coordinating these projects. Janine has commented that regional service agencies should be providing content.

Well, out of our 495 sessions, 83 of them were sessions that Shane and I either provided content or facilitated directly. I think that needs to be counted differently than just monitoring the technical aspects of the conference. We need to count support for videoconferencing, but when we get into providing content, that takes a LOT more time and we need to document that. Anyone else out there that is providing content? How do you manage to support the technical side AND provide content?

Wow- do you ever sleep? You should be very proud of your numbers!
I totally agree with you about the reporting aspect of electronic field trips. In any event I think I’ll send your numbers to Region 19……

Well, one way we have done it is that Shane is AMAZING! We are blessed to have the two of us to manage both technical and instructional…so many places don’t have that.

See you next week on Flickr and Skype.
